The Indian Navy has issued orders to bar its staff from using social networking sites, including Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp in naval areas, in an attempt to boost security and prevent cyber snooping. In addition to the devices, the use of smartphones on board ships and naval air bases was also disallowed. The restriction was enforced to prevent navy staff from becoming a victim of social media honey traps run by spies and compromising on confidential national security information.
