Policies of the next central government take primacy, not who becomes the prime minister, said CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury Sunday.
"It is not important who will become the next prime minister. What is important for the country is, what will be the policies of the dispensation that takes over at the centre after the upcoming Lok Sabha polls," Yechury said at a public meeting here.
The Communist Party of India-Marxist politburo member said the recent assembly elections in five states have indicated that people are looking for alternatives opposed to the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Referring to West Bengal's ruling Trinamool Congress's rally Jan 30 at the city's Brigade Parade grounds – the venue also for upcoming rallies of BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi Wednesday and of the Left Front Feb 9 – he said: "Unlike the others, there will be no announcement of a prime ministerial candidate at our rally."
Making evident her aspirations to play a significant role at the national level, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during the rally asserted that her Trinamool was the only alternative for the country and called for a change in Delhi.
