With monsoon already completing its first week – the Mumbaikars are yet to be relieved of potholes. A perennial problem plaguing the city, Mumbai still has around 170 odd potholes, the BMC’s official website, Voice of Citizens reported.
However, to add to the woes of the citizens, the civic body had only repaired 30 out of those 170 potholes, till yesterday.
The civic body’s website has a pothole tracking system, where a pothole’s status is showed publicly and the official in-charge of fixing the problem has to update it. In 2013 alone, there were about 25,000 odd potholes that were reported on the website.
Change in jurisdiction, according to sources, for the delay in repairing the potholes may partially be blamed for this. Previously, the Roads Department of the BMC was in-charge of it, while now the local ward offices have been handed over the responsibility. The idea was to get the work completed quicker. However, the dearth of engineers at the supervision level and limited resources has given rise to problems.
Additional Municipal Commissioner, SVR Srinivas, Roads department, told media persons on Sunday, “We have done this to avoid any uncertainty, as eventually, the ward office can reach and repair the roads much faster. The potholes will be filled soon and we expect that this year, there will be less potholes than last year.”
