Power Tariff cuts for Thane and Navi Mumbai residents

By: Apurva Bhatt

While Reliance Power have told their consumers that there would be an increase in their tariff, the state power generation company Mahahenco has given some good news to their consumers, especially those residing in eastern suburbs of the city.

According to Mahagenco officials power tariff of those residing in Thane, Navi Mumbai and beyond would see a 13% drop in their power tariff from this month, as additional 660 MW power has been synchronised with the state power grid from Sunday onwards. This has brought cheers in the households. Remarks Suresh Mulki an officer goer from Mulund, “Not only our tariffs would come down but we will be spared from load shedding this summer.” Agrees Shyam Mehta a resident of Thane, “This is certainly good news. We are paying huge tariffs and a reduction in power tariff will definitely help to manage our home budgets.”

According to Mahagenco officials there were plans to synchronize another 660 MW Koradi thermal unit by mid-2015 and this could take the total thermal power generation to over 9,000 MW in the state. Demand usually peaks in the months of March, April and May and there is huge electricity consumption even during monsoon, sources said.
