President, PM greet nation on Janmashtami

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Tuesday greeted the nation on the eve of Janmashtami festival, saying it was an occasion to remember Lord Krishna's teaching of performing one's duty without thought of reward.
Vice President Hamid Ansari also extended his greetings.
In his message, the president said Lord Krishna's teachings have been an inspiration to follow the path of virtue.
"Let us, on this sacred day, recall the teachings of Lord Krishna which have for centuries been an inspiration to us to follow the path of virtue and righteousness in thought, word and deed," said Mukherjee.
"On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, I extend heartiest greetings and best wishes to all my fellow citizens."
He added, "May Lord Krishna's noble message of 'Nishkama karma' or duty without thought of reward, motivate all of us to work in unity and with selfless dedication for peace, prosperity and progress in our country."
In his message, the prime minister said Janmashtami celebrates the triumph of good over evil.
"It should be an occasion to remind ourselves of Lord Krishna's eternal message of performing one's duty without any thought of the reward. May the festival bring happiness, peace and prosperity to the people."
The vice president said the festival is an appropriate occasion to recall the message of Lord Krishna that happiness in life and freedom from bondage can be attained by doing one's duty efficiently, without being attached to or affected by the eventual result.
Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, will be celebrated Wednesday.
