A sessions court in Mumbai on Thursday convicted a man and awarded him 10 years rigorous incarceration for causing the death of a lady traveler while attempting to steal her belongings in a moving train.
It also imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the burglar Rajesh Kumar Singh and instructed the authorities that the amount be handed over to the victim's son.
January 23, 2011 was the sad day for Daksha Gugal and her 11-year-old son who were commuting in a CR suburban local. When the train left Sion, Gugal stood adjacent to the door and was chatting on her mobile phone when Singh, who was on an electric pole near the track, hit her with a stick. Gugal lost her stability and fell on the opposite track and was run over by another train.
While the snatcher ran away with her jewellery and mobile phone, Gugal, who was lying in a pool of blood on the track, was rushed to a hospital but died 10 days later.
Singh was later detained on the basis of the IMEI number of the mobile phone, and was booked under various sections, including for murder. The prosecution examined 11 witnesses to prove its case.
