Hours after Congressman Rahul Gandhi dubbed the National Population Register (NPR) a tax on the poor, the BJP hit back by calling him the "biggest liar of 2019" for comment that he said people and his party were "embarrassed." Union minister Prakash Javadekar, who said that on the new law on citizenship and NPR, the people are with the government. The NPR does not involve any monetary transaction and its data is used to identify the poor to enable government welfare schemes to reach targeted individuals, he said.
