With ‘dynasty’ losing clout over their sulking party folks, the mummy’s boy – Rahul Gandhi is out to douse dissension brewing in the Congress party.
Wary of losing ace Congressmen to revolt ahead of the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, the Congress high command has a little option but to lend her ear to the grievances of Narayan Rane, who resigned earlier this week mentioning hollow assurances and differences with CM Prithviraj Chavan.
Rahul Gandhi met Rane on Thursday afternoon in Delhi, to assuage his bruised ego and urge the Konkan strongman to change his mind. Sources revealed the Gandhi-Rane meeting bore no fruit as Rane demanded more from the party.
"Rane demanded for a change in portfolio. He was asking for the previously-held revenue portfolio and also wanted the Pradesh Congress Committee president's post. Rahul said that the matter should be settled at the highest level, and that Sonia Gandhi will take a final call," a senior party leader said.
Rane told reporters after the meeting that he will take a call on his resignation after meeting with Sonia, even as party sources said that it was "unlikely" that his demands will be accommodated.
"Rane's shrinking mass base in Konkan, where he failed to get his son elected in the Lok Sabha polls, has been a wake-up call to Delhi," well-placed sources in the Congress headquarter revealed.
