Rains miss the catchment areas

By ME Bureau

While Mumbaikars are enjoying the heavy downpour since Thursday night, the lake side areas which supply water to Mumbai haven’t received as much rain yet. According to officials from the hydraulic department of BMC, “Modak Sagar, Tansa, Upper Vaitarna and Middle Vaitarna lakes did not received rains. We are hopeful that these big lakes which supply a majority of water to Mumbai get rains on Friday.” Vihar and Tulsi lakes that are within the city limits received significant rainfall on Thursaday—17.20mm and 14mm respectively.

The BMC  will take note of the situation regarding water stock in lakes by June end. As on Thursday, there is 49 days of total usable water content left in the seven lakes. But BMC officials said there's no need to worry because the total usable water content as on Thursday—1,84,707 million litres—is higher than that on the same day last year—1,63,240 million litres.
