Congress leader Sajjan Kumar gets life term in the 1984 anti-Sikh riot case after the High Court has quashed the earlier Court order acquitting him of the charges. The court also ruled that Sajjan Kumar must surrender before December 31.
The senior politician was found guilty in the killing of five Sikhs in Kant area of Delhi's Raj Nagar. The court specially praised the bravery of Jagdeesh Kaur, the main complainant and witness, who had lost her husband, son and three brothers in the riot in Rajnagar.
The case was filed against Sajjan Kumar and others in October 2005 on the basis of the G.T. Nanavati Commission report that enquired the anti-Sikh riot. Sajjan was a Lok Sabha member in 1984, where all the action took place.
95 Sikhs were killed and hundreds of houses were burnt in the riot that occured in the Eastern Delhi's Trilokpuri, soon after the death of former Prime minister Indira Gandhi.
