Salt Pan Lands

The Salt Pan Lands are at numerous locations in and around the city. These vast expanses of shallow, flat fields are dedicated to salt production. The primary areas include Wadala, Mulund, Bhandup and Trombay.

Salt collection typically occurs during the dry season, from November to April, when the sun’s heat aids in evaporation, leaving behind crystallised salt. Workers prepare for collection by flooding the pans with seawater, allowing it to evaporate and leaving the salt behind. This traditional method of salt production has been integral to Mumbai’s economy for decades. The process provides livelihoods for many and contributes to the local salt supply, showcasing the city’s blend of urban and rural elements.
