SC rules out CBI probe in Muzaffarnagar violence in UP
Eliciting its displeasure over the lukewarm approach of the state government to provide relief to the victims of Muzaffarnagar communal violence in UP, the SC however rules out the CBI enquiry into the incident providing relief to CM Akhilesh Yadav administration particularly at a time when the nation is headed to Lok Sabha Polls.  The court has also turned down the plea of constituting SIT to independently probe into the communal violence that claimed over 1000 lives.

The court lashes out at the ‘total’ failure of the state agencies – police and intelligence. The apex court expressed its annoyance over the state’s role in rehabilitation and resettlement of the victims and directed the government to speed up the process. It has also ordered the government to pay Rs 5 lakh in addition to ex-gratia payment the state claimed to have paid to the riots victims.

The Congress senior leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh alleged that the state administration had miserably failed to take pre-emptive measures in order to abort the violence when thousands of people gathered a few days before the violence in a rally organized by fissiparous forces that incited them to violence.’  ‘This culminated into a large scale violence that spread into the adjoining villages of Muzaffarnagar,’ he lamented.

It should be recalled here that the violence that gripped the city on 27 August 2013 had claimed 1000 lives so far.  90 people had been arrested and at least 1,000 people were accused in the communal clashes in the hapless town of Western Uttar Pardesh.
Six politicians were named among 40 people booked on Monday for inciting the violence. These included senior leaders from the BJP and Congress.
