New Delhi, Feb 20: After failing to file a response to the Apex court for the last five weeks, the SC has summoned Bengal's Environment Secretary to court on Wednesday seeking a report on the critically polluted areas in the state.
A bench of Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Sanjay Kishnan Kaul asked the official to be present as it noted that even after a lapse of five weeks the state has not filed its response. in January the court had mandated that all states need to file an affidavit on stating their plan of action to ddeal with pollution in their state. In case of no response it had mandated that the environment miniters will be summouned to court.
Despite all other states responding positively to the Apex court's order, West Bengal has till date not filed a response and is now seeking an extention of two weeks to do so which has irked the Supreme Court bench.
"You are a wonderful lawyer. You will not file affidavit in five weeks. You want two more weeks' time. And you will also not bring the man as ordered last time," the bench observed while expressing its irritation over the delay.
