Media Eye News Bureau: The Supreme Court ruled against the interference of khap panchayats in inter-caste and inter-faith marriages. Chief Justice Dipak Misra stated that “If people decide to marry, they are adults and you are nobody to interfere.” He further added, “Whether the law prohibits or allows a particular marriage, the law will take its own course. Don’t be the conscience keeper (of the society).”
The bench further stated that customs were not above human life and the rights of the people even if there were problems between adults in inter-faith/caste marriages, khap panchayats still do not have the right to interfere as that, it is illegal as well.
Justice Misra also said that a khap panchayat could not threaten adults or enforce their decisions regarding the choice of a marriage partner on the adults and that, if they still do so, the court would step in to stop such interferences.
