The second phase of the Mumbai Monorail which will run on a 20km stretch from Chembur to Jacob Circle and which will have 20 stations got a major boost when Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) successfully carried out launching of girder for Mono Rail bridge above the railway tracks at Currey road bridge earlier this week. MMRDA claimed that it achieved this task with an enormous effort over the past three months, including precision engineering and workmanship.
MMRDA's joint project director (public relations) Dilip Kawathkar said, "We achieved this with great precision and used skilled manpower. With this about 50 % of our civil work is complete now. We can target March 2016 launch." The operation required launching the bridge on several high capacity rollers mounted over several 'trestles' installed to bear the 62-meter long and 9.5-meter wide 450 tonne bridge safely over the critical railway tracks. An official said, "We will carry an estimated 1.8 lakh passengers per day once the entire corridor is commissioned because it will have inter-modal connectivity with suburban trains at Wadala and Currey Road. Besides, it will cater to areas that are not adequately served by public transport."
