Stop trespassing! We have 34 new escalators for you: MRVC

In its frantic move to curb deaths on train tracks every day, the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has launched a Rs 110-crore campaign to install escalators in railway stations.

Twelve odd suburban stations on the Western and Central Railway networks have been identified for the installation of 34 escalators on their premises, MRVC spokes person revealed.

On an average, 10 commuters are killed on railway tracks every day, most of who are run over while crossing the tracks illegally. According to the railway police, a total of 3,506 persons were killed in railway accidents in Mumbai last year.

Local stations in Mumbai like Kandivli, Borivli, Bhayander, Vasai Road, Nala Sopara and Jogeshwari on the Western line will soon witness escalators there, besides Kurla, Kanjurmarg, Thane, Thakurli, Dadar and Dombivli on the Central line.

“We have chosen railway stations where a maximum number of such accidents are reported, as well as those where trespassing on train tracks is rampant,” said an MRVC official.

Around Rs110 crore has been ear marked for this campaign, which also includes plans for foot over-bridges.

A senior official of MRVC said, “We have kicked off a drive to install escalators in an attempt to bring down trespassing on railway tracks.”

The CPRO, Western Railway, said, “The campaign has already been started. Apart from the railways, MRVC is also installing escalators in different stations.”
