Mumbai is acquiring the infamy of being most unsafe for women, next only to Delhi. A college damsel reportedly killed herself at her Santa Cruz (E) residence on Tuesday. In her suicide note scribbled in Hindi, she alleged that her brother-in-law and a 22-year-old senior at college compelled her into physical relations with them on separate occasions.
Both the accused were held by the Santacruz police on Wednesday on charges of rape and abetting suicide. The victim's elder sister, who was apparently aware of her husband's act, has also been booked but is yet to be arrested.
The 17-year-old hapless girl stayed at Madraswadi in Santa Cruz (E) with her mother and sibling. Her father has died sometime back. Her elder sister and brother-in-law live in Uttar Pradesh.
The fateful incident happened in 2011 when the girl visited her sister in UP and stayed at her home for over 45 days. During that time, her brother-in-law Ramlekh Kanaujia reportedly compelled her to get intimate with him, the police said. The victim's sister allegedly knew about it but she did nothing to stop this and inform police.
After her return to Mumbai, the victim but did not lodge a complaint against Kanau jia. "She studied commerce in a suburban college and was in the first year of the degree course. There, she was friends with a senior student, Abhishek Dixit. According to her suicide note, Dixit also forced her to get intimate with him. She hasn't mentioned when that happened," an officer from the Vakola police station said.
She was found hanging on Tuesday evening at around 7.30 PM at her residence, the police said. She was rushed to a public hospital, where doctors declared her dead. The immediate reason, which forced her to take the extreme step, was not clear, the police said.
"We have registered a case under sections 306 and 376 of IPC against Kanuajia, Dixit and the victim's sister. Kanaujia and Dixit have been arrested," the officer said.
