UN military observer outlived its utility: Cong.
With ceasefire violations along LOC fail to plummet, the Congress on Sunday said the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) has become redundant and has no purpose to serve any further in observing sanity along this one of the most volatile borders in Jammu and Kashmir.
 
The party noted that the mandate of UNMOGIP lapsed with the signing of the Shimla agreement in 1972 when India and Pakistan agreed to settle all differences bilaterally by peaceful dialogue.
 
"However, since the UN had continued to post personnel, India continued with courtesies provided as a cooperative member of the UN," a party release said.
 
It said that after the Shimla accord, India never filed any complaints of ceasefire violations on the LoC to UNMOGIP since bilateral mechanisms
