The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is expected to clean up many nullahs in the city, eastern and western suburbs, and desilt the Mithi River too. A proposal is expected to be tabled at the standing committee meeting on Wednesday. The cost of the desilting is over Rs 250 crore.
The proposal includes clearing nullahs of garbage which clogs them during the monsoons, causing flooding. "The money for desilting is expected to be spent over two years, and includes maintenance costs," an official said.
Corporator Pravin Cheeda of Congress from Ghatkopar says, “We have been demanding that the proposal to clean up nullahs should be tabled in the house in March itself so that work order can be issued and work can start from April 1. However like each year I doubt whether they would be able to complete the entire work before rains.”
