A construction worker who was crossing the road in Thane was knocked down by a speeding SUV resulting into his death on Friday.
The 28-year-old labourer, identified as Vitthal Madhav Singh Pawar, instantly died on the spot due to excessive blood loss on the Mumbai-Nashik highway. He was trying to cross the street near Majiwada, Thane early on Friday at around 9 am when a Range Rover slammed into him, killing him instantly.
According to eyewitnesses, Pawar was hit by a menacingly approaching sapphire-coloured vehicle. The driver did not see the man crossing the road and rammed into him. The collision was so powerful that the man was flung almost 50 metres away prior to hitting the ground. Pawar, a daily-wage labourer who lived in a nearby shanty, was rushed to Thane civil hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The victim had arrived here in Thane from Nanded about two months ago, looking for job, and was the sole bread winner for his family which includes his wife, a two-year-old son and a nine-month-old daughter.
The police informed that the accused was driving a Land Rover having registration number plate MH05-AX9009. He was moving towards Mahabaleshwar when the accident took place.
Post accident he surrendered at the police station and was booked under section 304 (A), 279 of the Indian Penal Code, and under section 184 of the Motor Vehicle Act, the police sources said.
