MUMBAI: Over 31,000 idols of Lord Ganpati were immersed till night on day 1 of the immersion on Sunday in Mumbai and surrounding areas. Unlike in the past, crowded procession, bands and lazims were absent this year. People preferred to go to the pond specially constructed by the Corporation for this purpose instead of going to the Arabian sea. However few ventured to go to sea for immersion, despite instructions. Many with small idols were also seen immersing in Ponds instead of buckets or drums at home.

Due to Pandemic and guidelines issued by the government, people were ensuring safe distance norms and were wearing masks. Many prefer to cut short the festival to one day from the customary 5,7 or 10 days. As per the restriction, most of the idols were less than 4 ft in height and were made out of solvable clay and mud. There were 170 artificial ponds were constructed across the city.
