The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a massive organizational restructuring of the Indian Railways as it gave its nod to the unification, among other steps, of the existing eight Group A Railways services into a Central Service called the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). Railway Board will no longer be organised on departmental lines, and replaced with a leaner structure organised on functional lines, the government said. Under the new Cabinet-approved organizational structure led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Railway Board will be headed by the Chairman of the Railway Board (CRB) who will serve as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) with four members and some independent representatives. The reforms were conducted at a two-day conference "Parivartan Sangoshthi" on December 7-8, 2019, with "overwhelming support and consensus from railway officers."
