A head constable from Delhi Police was slain today as pro and anti CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) groups fought each other even as Delhi Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal called for peace and harmony.

Ratan Lal, the head constable in Delhi Police lost his life while a youth was injured in the clashes. The youth was injured by a bullet fired by the protestors and unruly vandals set ablaze several vehicles and a house. Shahdara DCP Amit Sharma also suffered injuries and was rushed to hospital.

Several areas including Jaffrabad, Maujpur, and Gokulpuri witnessed violence and police resorted to using teargas to bring the unruly crowds under control. Condoling the death of the constable attached to Delhi Police, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed anguish on twitter: “The death of the Police Head Constable is very sad. He was one of us too. Please give up violence. Nobody benefits from this”.

Northeast Delhi has been witnessing violent clashes between anti-CAA and pro-CAA groups since Sunday afternoon. Efforts to usher peace have proved futile so far, even journalists covering the incidents were beaten up by the crowd and their phones were snatched to stop recordings.
