Saseekala Nair, IRS (Income Tax) has been appointed as the Principal Chief Commissioner, Kerala, for Income Tax.She is the first lady officer to occupy this position in Kerala.
The appointment has come at a crucial time when the government revenues have been drastically affected due to the economic impact of the pandemic and also due to the relaxations are given by the government for filing of Returns and payment of taxes.
The appointment of Saseekala Nair with her immense experience in finance and several other important ministries indicates the importance given by the government to facilitate and uplift economy and revenue on the path of revival and growth.
Saseekala’s appointment would play an important role in generating confidence among the top assesses and encouraging them to avail the relief measures announced by the Honorable Finance Minister.
Born in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, Saseekala pursued her education in the city scoring distinction in all levels including merit scholarship in 10th board and third rank in Kerala in M.Sc. Zoology. She also obtained a MBA in Public Policy from the University of Birmingham, UK. After her marriage in 1983, she attempted UPSC exam and was selected for IPS but opted to join IRS in 1985.
Saseekala is a veteran bureaucrat with more than three decades of experience in civil service in middle and senior management positions in the ministries of Finance, Defence and Petroleum and Natural Gas. She has done an assessment of large corporations and handled sensitive cases in Chennai, Mumbai and Kochi, successfully collecting crores in taxes. In her previous stints in Mumbai, Chennai and as Principal Director of Investigation (Goa) led very successful actions on cases pertaining to huge tax evasions and covered several politically sensitive cases. Under her leadership, her team recovered large amounts of black money and detected Crores of foreign assets under the black money act.
In the Ministry of Defence as Deputy Financial Advisor (Navy), she looked after both navy and coast guard budgets and was part of the negotiating team for large national and international contracts for defence equipment from UK, Germany, Russia, France and Israel. The assignment was a particularly challenging one as it happened during the Kargil war.
In the Ministry of Petroleum, she was posted as the chief vigilance officer of Navaratna PSU BPCL after empanelment as joint secretary to the Government of India. As a chief vigilance officer, she had to do a balancing act to win the trust of employees and enlist their cooperation in introducing many initiatives to increase transparency in procurement and procedures. She managed to gain the confidence of highly qualified officers of the PSU and implement ERP, e-procurement and the integrity pact.
