ME News Bureau: Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s teachings and practices gifted to the society is an extraordinarily unpretentious, natural technique, which nurtures every facet of life – be it physical, mental or spiritual.

He had famously stated: ‘Life is here to be enjoyed and no one has the right to suffer’, and throughout his blessed life, he was spreading awareness about this fact across the world.

And in this context and to achieve this end, the Maharishi was instrumental to popularizing a unique concept called Transcendental Meditation (TM) – a procedure of uncomplicated transcending. To comprehend what TM means, we have to just explore its name.

‘Transcend’ means to ‘go beyond’; while ‘meditation’ means ‘thinking’. While one practices TM, the mind wanders from the worldly, chaotic level of thinking, to a softer status, devoid of excitement, until one transcends thought completely, arriving at the quiet haven of the mind.

This is the state of ‘anandam’ or wholesome realization, where the mind is utterly tranquil but completely aware.

Since times immemorial, intellectuals have said that it is very challenging to transcend thought and gain the state of seamless internal peace. Maharishi differed.

He propounded that transcending was easy because the mind experiences growing levels of contentment at every step of the way.

And because no exertion is needed, any vigor or control averts the mind from transcending. This practice of graceful transcending is authenticated by the Bhagwad Gita, which the Maharishi referred to as the pocketbook version of the Vedas.
