Describing Sanskrit as the mother of Indian languages and repository of wisdom in many disciplines of knowledge, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari today called for efforts to promote Sanskrit among the youths and students to make it a world language.
“Merely singing the greatness of Sanskrit language will not suffice to preserve and promote the language. We will have to bring the language in practical use,” he remarked.
The Governor was speaking at the inauguration of a National Webinar on ‘Sanskrit: Origin of All Languages: Its’ Past and Present Relevance’ from Raj Bhavan, Mumbai on Tuesday (4th Aug). The Webinar was organized by School of Language and Literature of the Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University.
Crediting Sanskrit with keeping India united for several centuries, the Governor said that the Sanskrit mantras sung in all corners of the country including at Rameshwaram, Jagannath Puri, Badri-Kedar and even at the Pasupatinath temple in Kathmandu underscore the unifying character of the language.
The Governor said while many modern European languages have literature dating back only to 500 years, Sanskrit has literature dating back to millenniums. He appealed to scholars to undertake research about the science of sound and music associated with Sanskrit language.
