Cycle symbol may be frozen untill a party decision comes forth

New Delhi,Jan 2: With the Samajwadi Party split, neither faction may get the 'cycle' symbol ahead of the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, former Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi said on Monday. The analysis comes at a time when the Sawajwadi party vetran Mulayam Singh is in Delhi to meet EC officials to claim rights over the ccyle symbol after a coup from son Akhilesh drove him out of his own party.

"Both sides will give affidavits and evidence in support of their claims along with signatures of their supporters to prove they enjoy majority support," Quraishi told India Today TV channel.

"These will be verified and this may take four to five months," he added. "I don't see this happening before the elections as both sides have strong base and the claims will be contested strongly.

The fight over the symbol is becoming crucial since both factions of the party understand that in a state of sheer confusion there could be chances of people casting the vote without really understanding the underlying party politics and invariably may bring in the wrong leader into power if the Samajwadi Party wins.
