Returning To Roots

Mumbai: An increasing number of Indians staying in America are keen to move back, reconnecting with their ancestral roots amid changing immigration dynamics and a shifting American political climate. A recent report reveals a significant uptick in the number of Indian-origin individuals, especially second-generation Indian Americans, who are actively embracing life in their country of origin.

This change is not solely driven by cultural nostalgia. The increasingly restrictive immigration policies under the Trump administration and continuing uncertainties in the U.S. have served as a wake-up call for many. The crackdown on overstays, delays in green card processing, and overall tightening of visa regulations are pushing even legal residents to rethink their long-term future in the United States.

For decades, the “American Dream” attracted Indian families in search of better education, job prospects, and security. But today, many Indian Americans born and raised in the U.S. are questioning whether that dream still holds value. Several have started returning to India to build careers, launch startups, or simply reconnect with their heritage.

The report highlights a renewed interest in Indian culture, language, and traditions among this demographic. Technology has made it easier to stay connected with both countries, but it’s the sense of identity and belonging that appears to be fueling the desire to return home.

Notably, the rise of India as a global economic player is also a key factor. With booming industries, a growing startup ecosystem, and a rising global profile, India is no longer seen as a step back, but a land of new opportunities.

The shift underscores a deeper narrative — one that goes beyond geopolitics or green cards. It reflects a generation coming to terms with dual identities, and in many cases, choosing to honour both by taking their American experience back to their Indian roots.
