IND-SA Test in Kolkata: Special Gold Coin to Be Used for the Toss

New Delhi: According to reports, a special gold coin featuring Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela would be used for the toss in India’s first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens on November 14.

The India vs South Africa Test series is scheduled for the Freedom Trophy, which was designed to celebrate Gandhi and Mandela’s shared heritage and message of nonviolence.

The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has introduced a special gold coin with Mahatma Gandhi on one side and Nelson Mandela on the other, symbolising the virtues of peace, freedom, and nonviolence, to be used for the toss in the inaugural Test at Eden Gardens, according to India Today.

CAB President Sourav Ganguly said that the coin was designed specifically for the series and will be used in the toss.

According to the report, the CAB will organise the Jagmohan Dalmiya Memorial Lecture on November 13, the day before the match. Sunil Gavaskar will deliver the keynote presentation, with players from both sides in attendance.

Team India landed in Kolkata on Sunday evening, with skipper Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and head coach Gautam Gambhir having completed their white-ball responsibilities in Australia on Saturday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman and vice-captain Rishabh Pant has returned to India’s squad for the forthcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, which begins on November 14. The second game of the series will take place on November 22, with Guwahati making its debut as a Test venue.

India is presently third in the World Test Championship points table, with 61.90 points percentage (PCT), while South Africa is fifth, with 50 PCT, after a 1-1 tie in Pakistan. Following the Test series, India and South Africa will play three One Day Internationals and five Twenty20 Internationals.
