Medha Patkar ends hunger

Bhopal: Medha Patkar, a social activist and pioneer of the ' Save Narmada ' movement, finished her nine-day hunger strike in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday after her health deteriorated.

Patkar has been on a hunger strike in the Chhota Barda district of Barwani since August 25, after the Gujarat govt opted to increase water levels in the Sardar Sarovar dam without adequate provisions for citizens residing in neighbouring villages. Her demand was proper rehabilitation facilities for the residents. In a letter to Patkar on Monday, Chief Minister Kamal Nath urged her to end the hunger strike. Chief Secretary S.R. Mohanty of the state also wrote to the activist informing her about the measures made by the government of Madhya Pradesh to assist the persons impacted.
