Mumbai: Recently, after ten days of religious rituals, the Asthika Samaj in Matunga conducted the Maha Kumbhabhishekam for the idols of Lord Guruvayoorappan and Lord Ayyappa. Held from the temple gopuram, the ceremony involved the pouring of holy water over the Kumbams, marking the completion of a sacred ritual not performed in the past 12 years.
Earlier in the day, the idol of Guruvayoorappan was bathed with 1,008 kalas of holy water during the Brahma Kalasabhishekam, followed by an abhishekam with 108 kalas for the idol of Ayyappa. All the ceremonies were conducted under the guidance of Brahmasri P.C. Dinesan Namboothiripad from the Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple. The samaj is also referred to as the Kochu Guruvayoorappan temple, as the idol of Lord Krishna was installed there in 1974.
The Maha Kumbhabhishekam is performed once every 12 years to enhance the power of the deities within the temple. The ceremonies include various Vedic and tantric rituals such as Prayachitham homams, Maha Chathuh Sudhi, Adhivasa homams, Athbutha Shanthi homam, and Brahma Kalasa Pooja.
