Sanjay Barve took charge

Mumbai: IPS Officer Sanjay Barve took charge as Mumbai Police commissioner. He has replaced Subodhkumar Jaiswal who is appointed as new Director General of Maharashtra Police.

Barve, a 1987 batch IPS officer, was DGP of Maharashtra's anti-corruption bureau (ACB) before appointed as city's police chief.

He was part of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that investigated Abdul Karim Telgi's multi-crore fake stamp paper scam. He was awarded the President's Police Medal in 2006.

Barve, while addressing the media after taking charge, said that the city's security is his top priority.

"I want to assure Mumbaikars that they are safe, the city is safe and will remain safe. I want to appeal to the police and city residents to remain alert and vigilant. If there is anything suspicious, people should alert the police," Barve said.

New Director General Subodhkumar Jaiswal replaces Datta Padsalgikar, who retired on Thursday. Jaiswal had worked with intelligence agency RAW before rejoining the police force in 2009, after a gap of nine years.
