Kolkata: Sandip Ghosh, the controversial former principal of the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College Hospital, was brought to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Salt Lake office on Friday to be questioned about the rape and killing of a junior doctor that occurred on the hospital’s premises last week.
It’s unclear at this time, though, if Ghosh has been taken into custody or is just awaiting questioning.
The event transpired just a few hours after Ghosh petitioned the Calcutta High Court for police protection. But the court ordered him to submit a formal petition, and then the case will be heard the following week.
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the state Health Department to refrain from appointing Ghosh, who resigned as the principal of R.G. Kar on Monday, as the head of any medical college in the state until further orders. As a result, he is currently on leave.
Remarkably, Ghosh was named principal of the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital (CNMCH) just hours after he resigned from his position as head of R.G. Kar on Monday, citing “moral responsibility.” This development incited protests from the CNMCH’s younger doctors and medical students.

The primary charge against Ghosh is that, on August 9, in the early hours of the morning, he failed to lodge a formal complaint with the local police station following the discovery of the junior doctor’s death in the hospital lecture hall. According to sources, the police had to first file a case of “unnatural death” because there had been no complaints.
In addition to considering a number of petitions on Tuesday, the high court also brought up other issues regarding the hospital authorities’ handling of the matter.
“The principal is the guardian of all doctors working there… if he doesn’t show any empathy, who will? He should be at home, and not working anywhere. If the principal stepped down citing ‘moral responsibility’, it is a rather serious matter that he is rewarded within 12 hours with another appointment. Let him go on long leave, otherwise we will pass an order,” the court said.
Shortly afterward, the contentious physician applied for a 15-day leave of absence to the state Health Department.
