Minister announces cash awards for railway sportspersons

Union Minister for Railways, D.V.Sadananda Gowda, has announced cash awards to felicitate the Indian Railway’s sportspersons who won medals at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games-2014, at Glasgow, Scotland.

The contribution of railway sportspersons, as part of Indian contingent in CWG, has been significant.  Out of total 64 medals won by India, railway players bagged 9 medals.  The performance of railway weightlifters and wrestlers in particular has been amazing. They have bagged two Gold, one Silver and two Bronze Medals.

Gowda has announced a cash award of Rs. 25 lakh for winning Gold Medals, Rs. 20 for Silver Medals and Rs. 15 lakh for winning Bronze Medals.

These are the railway employees who won medals in CWG – 2014 and thus would be the beneficiary of cash prizes announced by the ministry. Sushil Kumar who won Men’s freestyle 74 kg wrestling and Satish Sivalingam who made mark in Men’s 77 kg weightlifting would get Rupees 25 lakhs each for winning Gold Medals.

Besides this, the others who won silver medals in the international sporting events are, Mandeep Jangra in Men’s 69 kg boxing, Chinglensana Singh, Hockey, Ayonika Paul, Women’s 10 metre air rifle shooting and Rajeev Tomar, Men’s freestyle 125 kg wrestling will get Rupees 20 Lakhs each.

While Pinki Rani, Women’s 48-51 kg boxing, Swati Singh, Women’s 53 kg weightlifting and Omkar Otari, Men’s 69 kg weightlifting will get Rupees 15 lakhs each for winning Bronze Medals.
