Guwahati:Assam minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the National Citizens ' Register or NRC-the list intended to identify legal residents and eliminate illegal immigrants from the northeastern state-can not be regarded as a "red letter" for Assamese culture. The senior BJP leader said the list would really help get rid of foreigners if he had little faith. In the final Assam citizens ' list released at 10 this morning, over 19 lakh people were left out. 3.11 crore individuals have been included in the list on www.nrcassam.nic.in. "We lost hope right after the draft in the current form of the NRC. When so many real Indians are out, how can you claim that this document is a red letter to Assamese society," Mr Sarma said to local journalists this morning before the list was published. "In districts bordering Bangladesh, like South Salmara and Dhubri, the rate of exclusion is the lowest and in Bhumiputra district, it's high. How it can be? We are not interested in this NRC anymore," he said. "NRC is no quarter-final, semi-final and final to drive Bangladesh out … wait a while and you are going to see more finals under the BJP system." Security is tight in Assam, with tens of thousands of paramilitary staff and police deployed across the north-eastern state bordering Bangladesh.
