Hundreds of farmers blocked the Amritsar Delhi railway line on Tuesday, demanding the clearance of sugar cane dues from a sugar mill in the village of Naranjanpur near Rayya town. Kisan Sangharsh Committee (KSC) activists have been protesting in the Butter Seviyan village of Amritsar outside of Rana Sugar Mill since Sunday. After the ultimatum to fulfil their demand for clearance of duties ended on Tuesday afternoon, they moved the protest to the roads. The farmers also blocked the Amritsar-Khemkaran track near Gohalwar village in Tarn Taran district. Police detained hundreds of farmers early on Tuesday, but many others managed to reach the tracks."The mill also stopped taking sugar cane from us instead of clearing our dues. We expressed our decision to block the routes to the administration. Officials should release our leaders, "said Jasbir Singh Piddi, vice president of the KSC. H Rana Gurjit Singh, a co-founder of Kapurthala Congress MLA and Rana Group, denied any non-payment of duties. He said "Nothing is yet to come. Seven farmers are not taking sugar cane because they have misbehaved. For the past three years, we haven't been buying their cane."
