Personality Development is very important topic today. Without a good personality, you cannot succeed in life. It encompasses the “dynamic construction and deconstruction of integrative characteristics that distinguish an individual in terms of interpersonal behavioral traits”. Personality development is prone to change and subject to contextual factors and life-altering experiences. We can safely say, personality development is also dimensional in description and subjective in nature. Personality development can be seen as a ‘continuum’ that varies in degrees of intensity and change. It is individual in nature because its conceptualization is rooted in social norms of expected behavior, self-expression, and personal growth.

If I ask you who would you think of when you hear the word personality? — Narendar Modi! Late Lady Diana! Amitabh Bachchan! Late John Kennedy ! or Hema Malini! Probably all of them right? “All of them are famous for their striking personalities that make an impression on people. What makes them stand out is their distinctive personality that inspires millions of people”.

What do you understand by the term personality? “It’s a collection of traits, behaviors and attitudes that define a person. The word personality comes from the Latin word ‘persona’ which refers to a theatrical mask worn by performers for different roles”. However, in today’s , it means much more than that.

When I say Lady Diana had good personality, you think of everything about her that impresses you. Her looks ,voice, fitness, hard work and determination, and body language. It’s sure difficult, but not impossible, to improve your personality. Personality development is investing in yourself, your qualities, and your growth.

What is personality development? Personality development is about growing your capacities, nurturing your talents, enhancing new skill sets, working on your weaknesses, and transforming them into strengths, and every individual, has unique skill sets. Your potential is multi-faceted, and investing in personality development helps you to harness your strengths. Focusing on your individual personality development adds to your capabilities and helps your dreams and aspirations turn into a reality.

To gain a charismatic personality, you have to develop your inner self as well as your outer self. The importance of personality development is acknowledged in personal and professional life.

What you need to understand is there is no easy way for hard work when it comes to personality development. The sooner you understand it, the better for you. You need to think about how to develop personality, chalk out a plan, set a goal, and work towards it every day.

Why  is it important to develop one’s personality? Personality development enables one to discover all the qualities one has. It empowers you to make the right decisions and to choose wisely and it helps in building that one winning quality you need every-day in your life i.e., confidence. Confident people are more capable to succeed in the long run. It assists you in communicating clearly, convincingly, and precisely. Once you know how to develop personality, you will be seen as a leader by your peers and colleagues.

Over the course of an individual’s lifespan, the stability of their personality has been shown to be variable, although this variability becomes equal in adulthood. Behavioral genetics account for the variability experienced across one’s lifespan. This is proved true in the transitions between childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. From childhood to mid-adolescence, the rate of individual differences in personality increases, chiefly due to environmental influences. However, genetic influences play a larger role than environmental influences in adulthood, resulting in fewer individual differences in personality between individuals who share similar genetics. The stability of personality across one’s lifespan is further evidenced by a ‘longitudinal’ study conducted on individuals across the span of fifty years from adolescence through adulthood. The results of this longitudinal study suggested that the personality was malleable, although variations in the level of malleability stabilized in adulthood.

A theses published in the ‘Journal of Personality and Social Psychology’ examined personality development in college students based on the “Big Five personality trait domains and facets within those domains”. The results suggested that the rank-order stabilities of facets were high, with values greater than 0.50 i.e., indicating a strong correlation and the results for trait domains were similar to individual facets.
