With coronavirus threat looming large not only in China but in India as well, a social robot is on hand to take care of the sanitation for children. Sounds surreal?

Well, it is a reality in some 19 schools in Delhi run by Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee (DSGMC). A robot by the name Pepe will be nudging children in these schools to take care of their hygiene. The Pepe robot costing Rs.7,000 each will be placed on a wall near washrooms to inspire the school children to wash their hands before having food and after playing.

Developed by researchers from the University of Glasgow in Scotland in collaboration with Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University in India, Pepe will interact with children and encourage them with its talks.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the President of DSGMC said that this is being done to promote hygiene practices including hand washing with soap among children and strengthen access to water, sanitation and hygiene in all schools run by the Sikh body.
