Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the New India Assurance Company Limited was providing a health insurance scheme for Covid-19 workers. The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme announced in March this year has been extended for three more months.
The scheme provides insurance cover of Rs.50 lakhs to healthcare providers including community health workers who come in direct contact with Covid-19 patients and run the risk of being infected. The insurance also covers accidental loss of life on account of Covid-19.
The entire premium amount for the insurance is borne by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Thus far, 61 claims were processed and paid under the scheme. A further 156 claims are under examination by New India Assurance and in 67 cases claim forms are to be submitted by states.
The scheme covers private hospital staff, retired personnel, volunteers, local urban bodies, contract and daily wage workers, etc. The insurance under this scheme is over and above any other insurance cover availed of by the beneficiary.
