On Tuesday, a 26-year-old man who had jumped parole for allegedly shooting and injuring a man in Antop Hill was once again taken into custody by police in Mumbai.

According to a police official, Vivek Shettiyar was allegedly plotting the murders of two other people in the city. The official informed that Shettiyar had been freed during the COVID-19 outbreak but did not return to custody when his parole period ended,

Shettiyar was apprehended by the Mumbai Police’s crime branch from Dombivli in the nearby Thane district, the official continued.

His wife and a friend had earlier been taken into custody by the local police on suspicion of conspiring.

Shettiyar is accused of shooting 35-year-old Akash Kadam in the stomach on Saturday morning with a country-made handgun. However, before he could not fire another round, the pistol got jammed, and so he ran away from the scene, leaving an injured Kadam, police said. According to police, Kadam was with him in prison.

As per the police officials, it was further said that Shettiyar had been accused of at least a dozen cases in the past few years, including ones involving extortion, murder, attempted murder, and violations of the Arms Act.

In 2017, a murder case was filed against him in the suburban Goregaon area, leading to his arrest. Shettiyar benefited from the government’s temporary release of numerous undertrial prisoners during the pandemic to lessen jail congestion.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Datta Nalawade stated that after serving out his parole, the crime accused never returned to prison and resumed his criminal activities. Over a dozen warrants were issued against him.

It is said that Shettiyar admitted to planning to murder two more people in the city during questioning following the arrest. Authorities said that both of these individuals had criminal histories.

According to DCP Nalawade, Shettiyar was turned over to Antop Hill police looking into the firing incident.
