Coronavirus death toll

National Health Commission of China has revealed that 908 people in China have succumbed to the coronavirus epidemic and a record 40,171 are infected with the malicious disease. Till midnight 6,484 severe cases were recorded while 3,281 people recovered and were discharged.

Chinese news agency EFE reported that 3,99,487 patients were found to be in close contact with the infected of which 1,87,518 are under observation. Amongst these 23,589 were suspected to have contracted the deadly virus.

Latest figures show an increase of 97 deaths compared to the preceding day with 3,062 new infections. Of the 97 deaths, 91 were reported in Hubei province in which Wuhan was the epicenter of the outbreak. A total of 2,618 of the 3,062 new coronavirus have been detected in Hubei alone.

All the reported deaths, except for one in Philippines, have been from China, accounting for 99 per cent of the deaths, even though around 20 countries across the world have confirmed cases. Coronavirus has reportedly claimed more lives than the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003.
