Media Eye News Bureau: The Supreme Court of India has restored the marriage of a Kerala woman, Hadiya, to a Muslim man, giving her full liberty to live with her husband. The top court quashed the High Court's order that annulled the controversial marriage.

The Supreme Court upholded Hadiya's marriage after her husband Shefin Jahan submitted an appeal against the Kerala High Court ruling on 24 February, 2017 that had cancelled their marriage.

The judges, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, said Hadiya is "at liberty free to pursue her endeavours," stating that the High Court should not have intervened, however, allowing the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to proceed their investigation.

The Supreme Court, on November 27, had sent Hadiya to the Sivaraj Homoeopathic Medical College in Salem, where she was pursuing her medical course, to complete her house surgency, under tight police security both at the college and the hostel as well.

The Kerala High Court had cancelled Hadiya's marriage after her father KM Asokan lodged a complaint, alleging that she was a victim of "love jihad", a term used by the right wing groups for the conversion of Hindu girls to the Muslim community after getting into relationships with them.
