Fire breaks out on under construction warship , 1 dead, one injured

Mumbai:

A  major fire broke out on an under-construction Navy warship at  Mazagon Dock, on Friday evening, one worker killed and another suffered minor injury.  The fire was reported inside warship `Visakhapatnam' at 5.44 pm. The fire was confined on the second and third decks of the warship.

Rajendra Kumar (23) died since he was trapped inside the ship when the fire broke out. He died due to asphyxiation after the fire started in the lower second deck where grinding operations were progressing.  The fire was brought under control by 7 pm, and an inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of fire, according to Mazagon Dock spokesperson.

Eight fire engines, six water tankers and quick response vehicles were sent to the spot to douse the flames. Two teams of firemen each worked in shift as the space was very confined with tremendous heat.  The Visakhapatnam class comprises four ships-Visakhaptanam, Mormugao, Imphal and Porbandar, all of them are being built at Mazagon Dock. INS Visakhaptanam was launched in 2015 and is expected to be commissioned in 2021.  The Project-15B warships span 163m in length and 17.4 m at beam. This will be propelled by four gas turbines to achieve speeds over 30 knots.
