23 suspected militants killed in Pakistan

At least 23 suspected terrorists were killed when Pakistani fighter jets targeted militant hideouts in North Waziristan Agency Wednesday evening, military officials said.

Pakistan's Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement that four militant hideouts were destroyed in the Shawal area of the agency through "effective and precise aerial strikes", Dawn online reported.

The air strikes were a part of stern actions Pakistan has been taking against Taliban militants following deadly Peshawar school siege earlier in the month, in which more than 140 people, mostly children, were killed.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ended a six-year moratorium on the death penalty following the attack.

The Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) said the school attack was revenge for the killing of militants' families in the military offensives.

The Pakistani military since June has been waging the assault against TTP and other militants in the tribal areas bordering Afghanistan.
