Security beefed up in the valley with unrest and infiltration on the rise

With the 62 days of unrest in the valley and all political means of finding a middle path failing, the Central Government has decided to rush in additional military and para military forces into the valley to combat infiltration bids as well as violent protests which are taking a toll on everyday life in the valley. Army battalions have already been moved into the four most violent south Kashmir districts of Pulwama, Shopian, Kulgam and Anantnaag after a restive period of two years.

Along with BSF troops the centre is also planning on bolstering the number of army battalions deployed in the valley since Pakistan based infiltrators are trying their best to reach the valley and carry out attack under the guise of stone pelting protestors. With 72 civilians and para military police casualties already reported along with close to 10,000 injured in the valley the decision has come into effect as a means of sealing up gaps in the already volatile border area.

Despite political efforts to find a resolution which included two trips by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, an all party delegation which came to hold talks with stakeholders in the valley, the Prime Minister and President of India personally requesting people to give peace a chance, various economic packages announced for the upliftment of the youth in the valley and replacing the pellet guns with PAVA shells, no real breakthrough has emerged to break the vicious cycle of protests followed by violence and death for the past 62 days. Commerce, health sector and education have been grievously affected in the valley where despite efforts of revoking the curfew, people have resorted to stone pelting on numerous occasions.

The four districts where army is being rushed in has seen the worst kind of violence in the ongoing protests and despite their stationing the army has been advised not to intervene unless asked for help by the local administration which has found it rather difficult in the recent past to provide adequate protection even to their own police officers and families, many of whom have had to take refuge in CRPF or army camps. With Hurriyatt and separatists unwilling to engage in a dialogue with the government and insisting on inciting the locals to hold on the band calls along with relentless violence the Central and State government are now looking at other means to curb the violent situation in the valley.  Defense minister Manohar Parrikar, has also made the stand of the army very clear as being the protectors of the borders with no intentions of engaging in internal matters of the state.
