Bengaluru: The birthday of ruler Tipu Sultan of the 18th century will no longer be celebrated in Karnataka as an official festival, in line with today's BS Yediyurappa-led BJP state policy. The BJP opposes any Tipu Sultan celebration on the basis that he was a "dictator."

"Our government has cancelled observing the controversial and communal Tipu Jayanti," four days after taking over the state's reins.
