American singer and pop star, Britney Spears,39, has been a lot on news lately because of her conservatorship. It has been seen that she hasn’t been in control of her personal life or her finances for the last thirteen years, this is called a court-dictated legal arrangement called a conservatorship.
Financial and legal conservatorship are arranged for those people who are not able to make their own decisions in their self-interest, in the case of a person who is identified with dementia or any other cognitive impairments. The reason why Britney had been kept in conservatorship has not been disclosed yet, but it was said that the judge implemented this decision on her life thirteen years ago in 2008, after suffering from a mental health crisis.
The conservatorship controls important decisions of her life including her financial, medical, and personal well-being. The conservators also oversee the visitation arrangements with her two teenage sons, who are under full custody of her ex-husband, Kevin Federline.
The person who was appointed as her conservatorship to look after her personal and financial arms was her father, Jamie Spears. In 2020, Britney’s lawyer stated that she strongly opposed that her father was the conservator and that she would refuse to perform if he was in charge of her career.
On a Wednesday, Britney asked the judge to end court conservatorship that has controlled her life and money since 2008. She said that "I just want my life back. I'm not here to be anyone’s slave. I'm so angry and I cry every day,". "My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship…they should be in jail," she added.
While making a statement in a court against the conservatorship she has lived under since 2008, Britney said that this arrangement is doing her "way more harm than good". She added she wanted to remove an IUD (intrauterine device) from her body so she could have got a baby but the conservatorship team didn't allow her to go to the doctor and this decision made her quite upset as she couldn’t control her own life.
Some of Britney’s fans have organized themselves into a grassroots movement #FreeBritney, to help Spears regain autonomy over her life. The dynamics between Spears and her dedicated fans are quite lovely and have given her much-needed support to get her life back from the court.
