Aung San Suu Kyi appears before court for 1st time since military coup in Myanmar

Legendary leader of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi who was denied a second tenure in power by February 1 military coup faced the court through a video link on Monday. Suu Kyi’s lawyer Khin Maung Zaw told media that he saw his client for the first time since the military coup over a month ago.

Suu Kyi attended court proceedings for a minor case relating to alleged possession of foreign made walkie-talkies. Her appearance came on a day when protestors again hit Myanmar streets in large numbers. Nineteen people were killed in firing by security forces across Myanmar while 30 were injured and 10 people were reportedly missing.

Security forces opened fire in Yangon, Mandalay, Dawei, Myitkyina and several other cities. UN Human Rights office reported 18 deaths while Democratic Voice of Burma provided details of 19 who died.

Suu Kyi was detained in Naypyidaw before dawn on the day of the coup and had not been seen in public since then. She has been kept under house arrest.
