IN Navy launches Karanj

The Indian Navy recently launched ‘Karanj,’ a third Scorpene class submarine. The submarine is constructed by shipbuilder Mazagon Dock Limited (MDL) in Mumbai and was launched by Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba and his wife Reena Lanba.

The submarine has superior stealth features and the ability to launch attacks with precision. Advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels and hydro-dynamically optimised shape as well. It will however undergo tests over the next year before being commissioned. Karanj is one of six submarines being built at the dock, in collaboration with French shipbuilding major Naval Group (formerly DCNS).

Last year, INS Kalvari, the first Scorpene class submarine was commissioned into the Indian Navy, December 14, 2017 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  While Khanderi, the second Scorpene class submarine was launched in January 2017.
