Breaking away from tradition, US President Donald Trump praised Narendra Modi in the visitor’s book at Gandhi Ashram in Sabarmati. Dignitaries who visit the Gandhi Ashram usually express their feelings in the visitor’s book. This time Trump set a new tradition.
Trump was accompanied by his wife Melania Trump and visited Hriday Kunj, the house in which Mahatma Gandhi had lived for 13 years. They also operated the charkha, the spinning wheel which was popularized by Gandhi. The couple spent somewhere over 10 minutes at the Ashram and were informed about Gandhi and his philosophy. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also highlighted a few achievements of Gandhi to Mr. and Mrs. Trump.
When the visitor’s book was president, Trump wrote: “To my great friend Prime Minister Modi, thank you for this wonderful visit.” Mrs. Trump also put her signature beneath it.
The US President didn’t pay any tribute to Gandhi's bust with ‘cotton yank’, a tradition followed by every visiting dignitary to the Ashram.
